Searching for one of the best bottles of Cabernet Sauvignon under $20? Look no further than the all-American classic from the Central Coast of California, Liberty School. Made by Hope Family Wines in Paso Robles this 2010 Cab pays homage to the tradition of honest work, dedication, and perseverance of the one-room schoolhouses that used to be centers of community, and knowledge in the American countryside.
Charlie Wagner, 4th generation winemaker and founder of Caymus Vineyards, along with his son Chuck Wagner produced this label in commemoration of the school Charlie once attended as a child in Rutherford, CA (14 miles North of Napa Valley, CA). Sourcing their grapes from Hope farms, another father and son duo, Chuck and Austin Hope, were then apart of Liberty School tradition. Together they created a niche for something special, a world renowned Cabernet Sauvignon that reflects true varietal character, premium quality and value.
Since its creation in 1975, Liberty School has gone on to earn its reputation as one of the best Cabernet Sauvingnon buys in the world according to Wine Enthusiast Magazine. In 2007 the label was names a “Top 10 hottest Wine Brand” by Wine Business Monthly and in 2009 Austin Hope was named “Winemaker of the Year” at the Mid-State Fair.
Here’s what you can expect:
Aromas of black cherry and plum, followed by hints of strawberry and all-spice on the palate which make for a very approachable fruit driven red. The tannins have firm characteristics of a Cabernet Sauvignon with a supple finish that allows for a variety of food pairings. There’s a dry, moderate mouth feel, and overall elegance that cannot be matched for this vintage and price point.
